This is Tracy. I photographed her wedding in Alabama this summer. The night before her wedding, Tracy’s mom slipped, shattered her hip and needed emergency surgery, making it impossible for her to attend her own daughter’s wedding. Tracy called me the morning of her wedding to share this tragic news. Trying desperately to find a way for her mother to experience the wedding day, she thought of moving the ceremony to the hospital with just the immediate families, but her mom was in no shape for this. It was looking as though her mother would miss the wedding completely.
After some thought, Branden realized that we could set up a computer in her mom’s hospital room and FaceTime with her using an iPhone. My assistant John (pictured below with the family during the ceremony) graciously walked Tracy’s mother through all of the day’s key moments, allowing her to experience it all in real time.
Most of us are stunned today by Steve Jobs’ untimely death. He was a pioneer who found ways to make our lives easier and more enjoyable. After Tracy’s wedding it was apparent though that Jobs’ inventions actually made our lives better. While FaceTime didn’t replace her mom’s presence, the use of his technology brightened a dark situation. For this we thank you, Mr. Jobs. You will be greatly missed.
