I am drawn more and more to images where the subject is not performing for my lens, but where a true moment is being documented. As a photographer it’s very easy to try and control the mood, tone and outcome of every image. There are times when a shoot needs someone (namely the photographer) to step up and be assertive. However, I’m at my best as a photographer when I allow a subject to drop their guard and just be.

Finding a balance between over-assertion and chaos is a challenge but it’s an important one. As I grow in my craft, I hope that I can become more like a quiet director; that I can gently guide, yet never stifle nor affect, the beauty of an unadulterated moment.

Well said.
Hear hear!
These are all such great images, by the way, and demonstrate your point so well.
Where is the one with the ocean and the cliffs? Lovely…
