Elyse and Paul

This past week we posted Elyse and Paul's wedding on our wedding site. It was another beautiful Kristin Newman event in Charleston. Elyse was glowing all day and their images carry a vibrance that makes me proud to shoot weddings. Also, check out their 8mm. My friend John Zahl, who lives in Charleston, introduced me to Van Cochran who shot the footage.
Happy Marriage Elyse and Paul!

Contest Winners: Ellen and Matt

Some of you may remember a photo contest that I offered on the blog about two months ago. If you have forgotten, click here, and allow me to jog your memory. Matt called and told me of his plan to propose to his girlfriend, Ellen, on stage after the Broadway show I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change. How could I resist this opportunity? I have been wanting to tell of my trip for awhile, but since she is a regular checker of the blog I had to keep it under wraps! Matt flew me up on Monday and I met them outside the theatre after the show (believe me, I tried so hard to talk the door man into letting me in but it was to no avail) and we went all around town taking pictures. Caleb was actually in New York on an unrelated trip and met up to shoot with me.
I feel so blessed that I was part of their engagement. They are truly beautiful people. I hope to be in touch with them for years to come.

I shot some more film that I will post in a few weeks but here's a quick look at some digital.

Az & Danny

Today marks the one year anniversary of my good friends Azurae and Danny. Az and I have been friends since Samford and I was so blessed to shoot their wedding last December in Seattle. The day holds two A Bryan Photo records:
1. Our only wedding in Seattle
2. Our only wedding on a Monday
People constantly comment on the uniqueness of their wedding, an instant classic in most viewer's minds.
What a year it has been for this cool couple. In June I got a call from Azurae telling me that Danny had been asked to go on tour with Tori Amos as her lead guitarist. Tori's husband, who is typically her lead, suffered from a nerve injury that laid him up for the rest of the year. I knew that Danny was pretty ridiculous with a guitar, but never knew that it was this serious. Within 48 hours, Danny and Az were rushed to England, far from their new and simple Seattle life and into a Tori Amos World Tour that would kidnap the majority of their first year of marriage. Tomorrow night marks the end of the tour and the beginning of the unknown for these two. I'm so proud of this giant leap forward for Danny's career and cannot wait to see where God has them next. I'm sure both of them hope that lots of down time in Seattle is in their near future.
Happy Anniversary Phelps'!

Update on The DD Dliwayo School.

Many of you have asked about the T-shirts and I'm happy to announce that the orders began shipping today! If you haven't gotten your order by December 28th please let me know. I appreciate your patience up to this point because I have never had to fulfill t shirt orders. We just figured it out when I got back from Africa and we are now ready to rock and roll!

The custom Hanson print:

These are going to be a bit longer until fulfillment because we are still working through the best way to frame them where the Hanson guys can sign them but we hope to get them printed by the end of next week. Also, I thought I had sold all 10 but the last print actually fell through. If any of you want the last of this very rare yet special Hanson piece, let me know at info@abryanphoto.com. The cost of this framed print is $750.

The school is working on a list to show what all your money is going towards and they are also anxious to get in touch with several of you who want to help them out further. Thanks again for all that you guys have done for this special school. It truly is remarkable!

The Jarrell Family

Last Christmas I got to photograph my friend Ray's family.

This year they added a family member and came back for some more photos. Man, what a good looking family!

You may remember that this time last year Ray was a part time DJ who was putting himself through med school. The DJ business took off and he has since kicked medicine to the curb and is DJing full time. Most of his weekends are spent in the Hamptons, Miami, or the Caribbean spinning for the high profile. Check out his site here!

Noah with Santa

It's interesting, as a photographer, getting pictures of your kid taken by someone else. I realize how little I care about lighting and composition. The only thing I notice is how freakin' cute my kid is. As photographers we tend to beat ourselves up about the perfection of an image, but we aren't looking at the images through the eye of the true beholder, the friend or loved one of the subject. Don't quit your continued pursuit of capturing incredible images if you are a photographer, but just realize how easy it is to please those who truly care (even if there is a green and red plaid border around the image and Santa looks like he won't even make it to this Christmas).

The Film is in!

Do you realize the feeling of getting back over 30 rolls of film from my sub-saharan adventure? Its like Christmas morning for a 10 year old.
Here are a couple shots of some kids from the first day with TOMS. I will post some more as we continue to edit them.

So how was your weekend? Here are four fun facts about mine:

1. Noah puked on my computer and for a day I thought it was done for. Then it miraculously came back. Whew.
2. I had 103 degree fever on Saturday which SUCKED. I'm just glad I didn't have a wedding to shoot.
3. Noah turned 2. Happy Birthday buddy (Pics to follow this week). After all his gifts this weekend, we could officially start a shrine to Thomas The Tank Engine .
4. I watched Hot Rod for the 5th time. I finally bought it so now all my future viewing will be free of charge. Please rent/ buy / pirate this film immediately. So funny.

Cheers! Happy Monday!

Hannah & Greg

While Caleb was busy shooting Abby and Richard's wedding, I was across town shooting Hannah and Greg. Greg goes to med school with my brother Philip at UAB. His wife Hannah was so great to work with and they both were so relaxed and easy going. Here are a few of my favorite shots.

Greg is a LSU alumn and from Louisiana. The 4th quarter of the LSU/ Bama game started when we arrived at the reception. Needless to say, the LSU crowd had a good time.

Seth Godin

One blog that I check regularly is that of Seth Godin, a man who is changing the way business' view marketing and sales. He feels that traditional advertising is dead, and the only way to grow your company in today's world is to simply be remarkable. His book Purple Cow is a must for those like my myself who struggle to stand out.

Godin updates his blog regularly and his posts are very insightful. Don't you hate it when you read something and you realize how much you have to grow and improve? That is what Godin's work is constantly doing to me. Later this week I am going to post a story of one of my vendors that is constantly fixing problems and going the extra mile for A Bryan Photo. Here is a recent post from his blog. I hope you enjoy.

What blogs do you read religiously? Leave a comment on this post, I'd love to know!

Thanks for Calling...Please go Away
By Seth Godin

Most customer service organizations are architected around a simple idea: interacting with customers is expensive, driving costs down is a good thing, thus getting people to go away is beneficial.
Think about it: most inbound customer service people are rewarded for on-phone efficiency. Calls per hour. Lack of escalations. Limited complaints. What's the best way to do that? Get people to go away.

If you're on this system and a long-time customer calls in with a complicated problem, one that's going to require supervisor intervention and follow up, what's your best plan? Is it to spend an hour with this person over three days, or is the system designed to have you politely get them to just give up?

I'd focus on building a system that measures [sales rate before call] vs. [sales rate after call]. If the sales rate goes up, give the call center person a raise. It's that simple.

Paypal seized the money in my account on Friday. After seven years as a user, they decided my new DVD project was suspiciously successful and it triggered all sorts of alarms. The first step was a call from them... a cheerful person asked me a few questions and all seemed fine. Then, with no warning, they escalated the process. The system they put me in treated me like a criminal and at every step they made it difficult for me to keep going. Phone calls were made, and I spoke with two incredibly friendly people who were clearly unable to do anything other than be friendly. Both people were happy to talk to me for as long as I wanted, but neither person was able to do anything at all. The system is clearly designed this way... to insulate the people who make decisions from the actual customers. The desired outcome (I go away) doesn't seem like it's aligned with the corporate goals (I stick around).

The question I'd be asking is, "Do people who go through process and manage to prove that they are not criminals end up doing more business with us as a result of the way we treated them?" If the answer is no, you're probably doing it wrong.

The last straw was this: After I put together all the documents they wanted (including a copy of my passport) and created a PDF, I tried to upload it. They don't take PDFs, the alert box said, just JPGs. So I sent the images and get this notice:

I followed up with the email address on the screen and got an email back, informing me that the email I had mailed to at PayPal wasn't monitored.

Sigh.

[PS in the ninety minutes after I posted this, I heard from a slew of people. Guess what? Every single one had a Paypal horror story to share. Once you teach an entire organization to mistreat customers, it's hard to fix.]

[PPS the problem is fixed now. Thanks for your concern...]

Abby & Richard

A few weeks ago, I was privileged to shoot the wedding of Abby & Richard. Taking into account the wonderful fall weather, the beautiful bride, and stud groom, it would be safe to say that the day was pretty perfect.

Here are a few of my favorites:

Peace. - Caleb

Heading to Toronto...

for the day to shoot a Walk and a Hanson show. Ash says I'm like the kid in Almost Famous, following around the rock band.
I hope to post some shots sometime tomorrow.
